I am also learning SQL (Structured Query Language) in my new adventure into the world of data and analytics. Being a data-driven individual who has always wondered how companies make decisions based on data, I quickly realized that being knowledgeable about databases would be an important skillset, and SQL is the place to start. The thing that I liked about SQL is that it is clear and has applicability in the real world. A database is the unsung hero behind all apps, all websites, and all reports. And SQL is the language that enables us to interact with, manage, and make sense of that data. Since I need to pull reports, fix dirty data, or analyse customer behaviour, SQL provides me with the means to do everything efficiently. I began my learning experience with basic commands such as SELECT, FROM, and WHERE, and slowly progressed to advanced processes such as joins, subqueries, aggregate functions, groupings, and window functions. I am also getting to know how to operate with real-life relational databases and how to formulate queries to find the logical solutions to the problems. I am currently going through practice with sample datasets and doing minor projects such as sales data analysis, user activity, and customer segmentation. I also began to study SQL on such platforms as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or even cloud-based BigQuery. Both environments provide me with an insight into applying SQL in various industries and systems. My favorite thing about SQL is its structure and logicality. It is like a puzzle, trying to get the correct query to retrieve precisely the data wanted. It is not a matter of syntax but of posing the correct queries, of being able to subdivide them into steps that are comprehensible to the database. In the process, I have discovered the value of being detail-oriented. The omitted comma or a wrong table alias may alter the whole output. However, every error is a lesson, and I am now a lot more certain about writing and debugging my queries after some practice. Outside of work in the practice, I am self-studying with the help of online courses, forums, and YouTube tutorials. I also subscribe to SQL challenges and case studies to improve my logic as well as my speed. I also began to comprehend how SQL is linked to data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau, which is making me envision the larger scope of data processes. My long-term career goal is to be in the field of data analytics or business intelligence, and I am aware that SQL is one of the fundamental skills that I will use. It could be user behavior analysis, dashboard generation, or just plain decision-making based on clean and correct data---SQL is the basis. I am just getting started, so each query that I compose is getting me one step closer to something substantial.
